Three posts in one…
I’ve been distracted by life and I apologize. Every weekend has been full of traveling and family visits, therefore I’ve used what little down time I’ve had to do just that. Relax. Watch movies with Devorah. Play cards. You know, the necessities.
I was debating putting all these posts up separately, but I’m not going to. There aren’t a lot of pictures to scroll through.
ADVENTURE #1 – Drive to Albany
Devorah’s grandma was in Albany for a conference. Since that’s a whole lot closer than the East Bay in California, we drove out for a quick lunch visit before she had to catch a plane. It was a great time and the drive was only 3.5 hours. Really we just sat, drank coffee, and had a light lunch. We had an hour or so to kill before she needed to be at the airport, so we drove around looking for someplace that might be interesting to check out. We found America’s First Shaker Settlement, complete with gift shop. It’s actually right down the road from the Albany Airport if you happen to be in the area.
I really should have posted early about this visit since my short term memory is on the fritz. I took a photo though:

ADVENTURE #2 – Drive to Boston
Ooh! This was a good one. Visiting Dev’s sister, her husband, and their daughter for Halloween. Ixa’s first Halloween. The plan was that we’d pack up Wednesday night and Dev would pick me up after my shift on Thursday, then it’s only a 6.5 hour drive. That makes sense, right? I’m out of work at 4:30, we’re in by 11:00, no big deal right? Wrong. Apparently, we had forgotten that up to this point a “late night consisted of staying up past 8:00pm. Seriously, we are those people. So, after about three or so freak-out-truck stop- coffee-refill moments we were there. Dude! Babies grow FAST! Ixa is so big and already talking gibberish. It’s pretty amazing. We brought a costume to help her fit in better with her brothers.

The before and after.

Winky, the pumpkin I carved.

Kitty, the pumpkin Devorah carved.
There was a kid’s parade that we walked to from Kesh and Kami’s new place (which, by the way is gorgeous.) It was so much fun, seeing the costumes and house decorations. There were a few little crazy jack-o-lanterns that were fun to watch run around.
I really like that we are living so close to them. Not only is it great for Devorah to be able to visit and see Ixa grow up, but I feel like I loosen up and get to know them better too. It’s difficult for us having so many family members all over the country. Especially, without the time and funds for traveling. Day trips are feasible and work to keep us feeling connected. We have this hope that some day, when we have our land, we’ll be the place that family and friends come to visit. The more the merrier. That’s our goal.
Anyway, that’s what we’ve been up to.
ADVENTURE #3 – End of Eat Local October 2008 Challenge
Okay. I’m torn on this one. Let me rephrase that. This challenge served it’s purpose completely. We managed to eat as much from the farm that I worked on and other goods purchased within the set radius of “local”. A lot of our fare has been beans and squash, both we enjoy so that’s not a problem. The problem is that I’ve noticed that I have a digestive problem. At first we thought it was just an issue with wheat or gluten, but (and no TMI here) it looks to be a bit more serious. Definitely manageable, but still a pain. I still need to get some tests done so we can figure everything out for sure. So, that’s why everyone keeps asking if I’ve lost weight. Okay, moving on…
Here’s the last meal: butternut squach soup, potato hash, and a salad. All local, mostly free.

My dear…I would give yourself some time to adjust to your new setting. You have just completed a great challenge and drastically upped your local/organic intake…some folks take months to adjust to a new diet. (TMI coming) If you are not bleeding…I think you might be okay and just give yourself some time. Have you had any cheese or dairy? You may need to increase protein in your diet with some local hens or even some fish. Let me know if you need any advice…being a nurse always has it’s benefits….
